Imagine that you've taken some wonderful photos over the weekend and saved them to your free account on the dotPhoto Internet site; on Monday, you run into a friend and tell him about your weekend. Data service is an environment that allows different programs to run on specially enabled phones offered by Verizon, U.S. Cellular, AT&T Wireless, Alltel and Midwest Wireless mobile phones . dotPhoto's Pictavision application runs in the data services area of your phone in the same way that your computer programs run on Microsoft Windows, the Mac OS, Sun Solaris, or Linux. The type of file sent to the phone can vary depending on the phone. The dotPhoto site stores all its photos in the JPEG format and will translate the file to the proper file type for the phone being used. On average, the file being sent to the phone is approximately 16K. TOP What phones does Pictavision work on?
Currently, Pictavision works on the Sharp Z-800, Motorola T720, Audiovox 9500, and the LG VX4400 color phones. This phone has been tested and approved by your carrier for data service applications. TOP Where can I buy a data service enabled phone?

No. The Kyocera 3035 has been approved for data service applications, but the 3035 is a black-and-white phone with "one-bit" graphics. In other words, the picture dots are either black OR white: any images that dotPhoto might send to such a small one-bit screen would look very blocky and only barely recognizable, so dotPhoto does not offer Pictavision for this phone. Pictavision will probably not be available for black and white phones unless the screens improve and provide better gray scales. TOP Does Pictavision save the photos on the phone?
Pictavision currently allows you to save photos on the Audiovox 9500, and the LG VX4400 color phones Pictavision is not currently save photos on the Sharp Z-800 phone. A new version of Pictavision will be released shortly that will allow this on the Motorola T720 phone as well. Check www.pictavision.com for current status. What will Pictavision do in the future?
No, however, you can send an email invitation to with a click-able link that will start a browser and take your guest to view that picture on dotPhoto. dotPhoto will continue to add functionality to Pictavision as we go forward. When Multimedia Messaging System (MMS) becomes available on your wireless carrier's network, dotPhoto will allow you to send pictures from phone to phone. We envision photo ordering, photo sharing, and saving photos that are tied to the caller ID function so your friend's photo displays when he or she calls. Our ability to make these advancements depends in large part on advancements in the phones and the data service operating environment. TOP How long does it take to download the image?
The 16K BMP image takes approximately 10 to 16 seconds to download depending on network and connection conditions. When the next version of data service enables JPG files, we expect to cut the download time by 75%. TOP Can I upload pictures from my phone?
No and possibly. "No" because most phones do not have cameras or a source of photos. "Possibly" because, if you have a data service or MMS application that can e-mail a photo attachment, you could e-mail that photo to your dotPhoto account using dotPhoto's standard e-mail/upload routine. dotPhoto is the only photo web site that enables voice annotation of photos: you can use your local PC microphone to record your voice and attach the voice files to your photos.
